*Warning*

If you approach and ATM machine and you see a sign on it that states, we are testing a new keypad system, please be patient should there be any problems with your transs. RUN do not use the machine!!!!!! Most likely there is a "Skimmer Device" on the machine and if you use it, a thief will get your atm card number and pin number and clean your account dry.

"Skimmer Devices are a keypad or small electronic pad that records your card number and keystrokes for your pin number".

Identity Theft incidents rose 80% between the years of 2002-2003

Here is what some victims have to say...........

Arizona Woman Taken For A Ride

My name is Lynne K; In 2003 I went on vacation to visit my son in New York. While away I had my house remodeled. Before leaving home I decided not to take all my credit cards with me, part of self-control in spending habit that I practiced. I locked my Visa card away at home in a secure place thinking it would be ok. Not thinking about having strangers in my home at the time, ultimately this proved to be a big mistake.

After coming home from vacation, beginning with my next credit card statement, I began noticing large purchases which eventually totaled almost $5,000. When I checked these purchase dates, they were for during the time I was on vacation. The only persons who had the keys to my house was the contractor for the remodeling.

Purchases were for office equiptment such as a printer, and other items were purchased on my card, internet services with several different providors, and other things which were all purchased online.

Proving to these companies that I did not purchase anything from them has really been a nightmare; sometimes you get the feeling that they are indirectly accusing you of lying. The Internet service tell me that they willstop the new charges to the account but the only way I could accomplish this was to close my current Visa and open a new one.

I have had to fraud flag every account I have; change credit card account numbers, get help cleaning up my credit bureau reports. Besides them getting my Visa info they also got ahold of all my old statements for other cards. Please do not let this happen to you, it is not pleasant to deal with, and you always have the worry of repeated victimization because someone out there has all of your information.

Victim: I have been fighting this for years. The first incident occurred about 8 years ago when someone used my info to open up a cell phone account. They also purchased about $700.00 in jewelry, some gas, and a few other things. I got this cleared up, but didn't realize at the time how bad it could get.

In 1997, I had my mail stolen from outside my house. I didn't realize it at the time but eventually started getting late notices from my utility companies and credit card company. I also had a student loan payment in the mail so they got my SSN. Eventually, the fun started.

The first thing that happened was that someone opened a telephone account in my name. This went unnoticed until I moved and tried to hook up my phone -- the rep told me that I already had a phone, and was this an additional line?

Next, my wife and I had bought a couch from Sears and opened a credit card account. About 2 months later I get a call from the Sears fraud department. Someone had tried to establish credit with Sears using my info. Thanks to Sears paying attention, this guy was not able to open the account. At this point, I called all of the credit reporting agencies and put flags on all of them stating that I must be called at home before credit can be granted.

The final incident happened last year and was kind of strange. Someone used my info to get a driver's license in my name. They opened an account with Dell Computers and bought about 8,000 dollars worth of equipment. The funny thing is, they made payments on the stuff for about 2 years. The reason I got called was because a collection agency was trying to collect. That took about a month to clear up.

I have filed police reports in 3 different cities in the area, and as I mentioned before, placed alerts on my credit report. It must be working as I am in the process of buying a house and my credit score is a 790. The mortgage broker says that he sees about 2% of his clients with credit like mine.

Please, if you are a victim of credit fraud contact the credit agencies immediately and place an alert on your report. Next, file a report with the police department. Also, if you are a victim of identity theft you are entitled to free copies of your credit reports.

Almost 10 Million people were victims of identity theft in 2002

Victim: On 3-10-03 my bank's loss prevention dept. contacted me to question some charges they found to be out of my ordinary spending habits. Someone stole my debit card number. I denied making these charges because I had not.

In the few days to follow, I learned $3000+ had been charged and these were pending. Meaning, they had not deposited to my account. I was not given an option to make things simple on myself, the bank and the merchants by rejecting the posting of these charges. I was told to wait till these charges were posted to my account and then an investigation would begin. The bank is issuing a provisional credit and putting the money back into my account. I have a brief description of the merchants on my bank account statement.

Three charges were of the same amount of $912 for a French gambling location. I found a site online that matched the name on my bank statement. One charge for long distance was thru a French telecommunications merchant. This charge was $132. The other charge of $187 from what I have learned is another French gambling location.

I am sure once the bank does their investigation, they will find what I found. I rarely use my debit card. I do not throw away any receipts. I began looking at them and found that a few merchants I shopped at had my complete card number on the receipt. This leaves me wide open for a staff member to be a thief.

It appears it is easy for a thief to connect their own devices to ATM machines and card machines and get numbers. I think merchants should go the extra mile and use whatever means possible to protect card holders. I learned the merchant is getting charged back because of the fraudulent charges. It is their loss. I hope the culprits are caught and punished to the extreme.

You Could Be A Victim Right Now And Not Know It!

This Could Happen To You!

When a victim and her husband went to the bank in December to refinance their home, they thought it would be routine. After all, the couple, who live in Wi., were refinancing with their existing mortgage lender, and they prided themselves on their credit history. So it was quite a shock when the bank officer turned them down, pointing to their credit report, which listed numerous accounts in arrears.

It turns out that a woman in Texas had applied for credit 19 times using the victim's name and Social Security number. In all, she had made purchases totaling $60,000, leaving a trail of unpaid debt that the victim is
desperately trying to prove is not hers: a $25,000 loan for a mobile home, two car loans, credit card bills, and charges for a cellular phone and other services. "She torched my credit to the point where even she
was denied," says the victim.

Victims notice identity theft anywhere between a few weeks to years later. Many Americans do not regularly check their credit reports making it impossible to know when identity theft occurs. Victims are left feeling violated and bewildered. How could this happen? When did it happen? What do I do? these are all common questions asked each and every day by victims.

About the author: Karyn Solochek has done extensive research into the different scams that are circulating. Having been a victim herself and because of the lack of information that local authorities have, she was forced into well over 800 hours of research in order to defend her and her husband. In her book she tells of many others around the world that are victims but are being prosecuted by local authorites because of their lack of knowledge it what is happening.. Karyn now also works with several non profit organizations that help victims of crimes. She also volunteers her time to help other victims herself. Portions of the proceeds of the sales for her book will go to defray the cost of her work as a victim advocate. Karyn is also available for speaking engagements to educate people and organizations on how they can prevent this from happening to them.
