  Here's a true life story: Not all stores are this actually this bad, but many will take advantage of unknowing, uninformed consumer. Therefore, it's extremely important that you are as informed and knowledgeable about what you're doing and what you're buying. That way, you'll never end up like this poor guy.

I remember the first time it happened. It wasn't my first time in a speed shop by any means, and I knew it wouldn't be my last. So, I was standing there looking at a performance air intake for my car, and this guy walked in. Now, I saw him pull up to the store and he had a nice new Honda Civic, with a really nice set of wheels and tires on it and lowered at least 2 inches. I figured this guy knows what he's doing so I decided to listen in. Next thing I knew, he was asking the store owners about the very air intake I was just considering - asking them what it does, and how much power it gives. I noticed the owners give each other a sidelong glance and launch into some fairy tale about how the intake will give him at least a 20 hp gain, and it "acts like a turbocharger" by forcing more air into the engine. I couldn't believe my ears!! The store owners kind of gave me a "shut-up" kind of look, so I didn't say anything. To my even greater disbelief, the guy with the Civic starts nodding and says "Cool…I'll take it!" and proceeded to pay almost 50% more than the part would have cost anywhere else - uninstalled. It was unbelievable!! The looks on the store owners faces were, of course, pure joy as they rang him up and sent him out of their store, with the newly ripped off customer promising he'll be back. When he was gone, they looked at me and burst out laughing…and to be honest, I started laughing too, although I was partly disgusted. Disgusted that a) this guy had no clue as to what he was doing b) that the store owners so willingly ripped him off. I voiced these very thoughts and the store owners heartily answered "Hey, if the guy doesn't know what he's doing, it's not our fault. He should know better." Although, by that point, I was really sickened by their business ethic, I had to admit that there was some truth to what they said. The customer was uninformed, and therefore allowed himself to be a target. So, I walked out of the store, of course, not wanting to give them my business. As I walked out, I heard them plotting what they were going to sell him next. I promised myself right then and there, that I was never going to be in the same position that customer put himself in.
